The Power of Belonging
Last week in Cancun, I asked a room full of Rotarians to put in earplugs. I was leading a session at the Rotary Institute on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, or DEIB. Rather than simply talk about barriers, I wanted people to experience one. I asked everyone to turn to the person next to them and introduce themselves. Over half struggled to hear. For a few minutes, they experienced what a person with hearing challenges may face throughout an entire Rotary meeting.
We then considered situations that happen in our clubs every day: a member who cannot hear the speaker, a guest sitting alone while longtime friends gather together, an inaccessible meeting place, or someone from a different background, language, or faith wondering whether they truly belong. Sometimes we simply do not see the barrier because it is not a barrier for us.
That is where DEIB becomes practical. Accessibility can mean using a microphone and reading important information aloud. Digital accessibility means making websites, graphics, and videos easier for everyone to use. Representation asks whether people can see themselves in our club and its leadership. Engagement means considering cost, meeting times, family responsibilities, and different ways to contribute. Belonging asks what happens after someone joins. Who makes the introductions, helps them find a meaningful role, and checks in?
I ended my presentation with a Rotary quilt we created together. Each piece is different, reflecting the thoughts and experiences of the person who created it. Joined together, they become something stronger. The same is true of Rotary.

DEIB does not have to begin with a new program. It begins by simply noticing. People join when they feel welcomed. They stay when they feel they belong.
